Rivers & Rails
Starting in 2007, we are teaming up with the Big South Fork Scenic Railway to make a new trip - Rivers & Rails. This trip combines a Scenic Railroad ride with a 1/2 day canoe trip. Below are the details of this exciting new trip.
|
RIVERS & RAILS DAY TRIP |
|
| 9:00 am | On the day of your trip you will be met at the finish point at the Yamacraw river access on the west side of the Big South Fork. A map and directions are available on Sheltowee Trace Outfitters’ website. From there, we transport you to the Big South Fork Scenic Railroad. Upon arriving at the train station, you will have time to tour the McCreary County Museum and the train station before departure time. | 11:00 am | The train departs at 11:00 a.m. The train travels 12 miles through the Big South Fork area backwoods, arriving at Blue Heron. Take a self-guided tour and listen to what it was like in the coal mining camps in the early 1900's. All narratives were taped from people that lived or worked in the coal camps during that time. Enjoy your “coal miner’s lunch”, complete with a souvenir bandana, in the open air pavilion. |
| 2:00 pm | Our staff meets you with paddling gear, instructions and safety information. You will be outfitted with a PFD and paddle before embarking down river on a 5-mile canoe trip, finally ending your adventure at the Yamacraw river access where your car is parked. |
We suggest that you bring a waterproof (just in case) camera, sun screen, and sunglasses (with a glass strap). Wear clothes you can get wet in and shoes that will stay on your feet. Most people take around 2 hours for the canoe trip, but you can take longer if you would like. All canoes and customers must be off the river by 6:00pm. All times are Eastern Time.
REMEMBER - River & Rails trips are scheduled by reservation only. Reservations must be made at least 2 weeks in advance. Payment in full is required when reservations are made. Visa, MasterCard, cash, and/or money order are accepted and can be made with either STO or BSFSRY. A refund of 50% will be given to cancellations made 72 hours prior to the reservation date or full credit can applied to another date during the package year. Cancellations after 72 hours will result in loss of all payments. Trips run rain or shine.
RESTRICTIONS - There are no age or size restrictions for the train ride; however, the canoeing trip requires individuals to weigh at least 25 pounds and have a chest size no larger than 56 inches. We allow only two people per canoe, with the exceptions of small children between 25-60 pounds. No pets please.
LIABILITY - Paddle sports have inherent risks for which you must sign an Assumption of Risk. In addition, minors (under 18) must have a parent or guardian sign acknowledging and accepting responsibility for them. This release form is available in advance from Sheltowee Trace Outfitters.
