General Employee Information
Sheltowee Trace Outfitters is an outdoor adventure company offering commercial raft and canoe trips in south central KY. We are situated in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest, 5 miles east of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park (approximately 10 miles west of Exit 25 off of I-75).
Our season runs from March through October, but our busy season is from Memorial Day to mid-August. Hiring begins in January. Although we hire more guides than any other position, it is the most popular job here, so we have are usually done hiring guides by the beginning of May. We do training classes for guides starting in late April or early May, and we will have several classes with the last one generally being the beginning of June. Other positions, such as office staff or food service positions, generally take longer to fill. We are often hiring those throughout the season. Although we do maintain a waiting list for guide position once all openings are filled, we will usually fill a vacated guide position with staff members who were hoping to move over to a guide position.
No experience is necessary; we will train for all positions. Applicants should enjoy the outdoors and be eager to convey that enthusiasm to other people. This is a service business, so people skills are essential. Most positions require outside work in all kinds of weather, and even inside jobs are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations (we have neither heat nor air conditioning in our buildings). Several positions (raft guide, shuttle person) require carrying heavy objects, such as rafts and canoes. All positions require working all weekends throughout the season.
We expect to hire about 30 new people this season. Once you have trained in your primary position, cross-training is encouraged, subject to training availability. People that can work more than one position are particularly useful. We are generally able to keep them busy even during slow periods. For instance, anyone that is interested can cross-train as a climbing wall belayer. It takes about 1 hour to train.
The pay here is not high, but this area is fairly remote, and expenses are low. Primitive housing is available free on-site, as are showers and a washing machine. We do drug testing on all our employees, so if you use any drugs, please don′t waste our time.
