General Info
We do drug testing on all our employees, so if you use any drugs, please don′t waste our time.
• General Season
Our season runs from April through October, but our busy season is from Memorial Day to mid-August. Hiring begins beginning to mid March, but we take applications before then. Although we hire more guides than any other position, it is the most popular job here, so we have are usually done hiring guides by the beginning of May. We do training classes for guides starting in May, and we will have several classes with the last one generally being the beginning of June. Other positions, such as office staff or food service positions, generally take longer to fill. We are often hiring those throughout the season. Although we do maintain a waiting list for guide position once all openings are filled, we will usually fill a vacated guide position with staff members who were hoping to move over to a guide position. All positions require working all weekends throughout the season. LessΔ • We Train!
No experience is necessary; we will train for all positions. Applicants should enjoy the outdoors and be eager to convey that enthusiasm to other people. This is a service business, so people skills are essential. Most positions require outside work in all kinds of weather, and even inside jobs are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations (we have neither heat nor air conditioning in our buildings). Several positions (raft guide, shuttle person) require carrying heavy objects, such as rafts and canoes. All positions require working all weekends throughout the season. LessΔ • Cross-training
We expect to hire about 30 new people this season. Once you have trained in your primary position, cross-training is encouraged, subject to training availability. People that can work more than one position are particularly useful. We are generally able to keep them busy even during slow periods. For instance, almost anyone that is interested can cross-train as a climbing wall belayer. It takes about 1 hour to train. LessΔ • Pay
Starting pay for hourly workers starts at $10/hour during training with a jump to $12.00 for the first grade increase (after 40 hours). Junior Guides start at $80/trip, moving to $85/trip after 10 paying trips and $90/trip once you reach G1 status. Drivers train at $80/day, moving to $90/day as a Junior driver, $95/day as an intermediate driver and $100 once you reach D1 status Primitive housing (tent platforms) is available on-site for $10/week or a bunk in a camp-inn for $20/week. This includes showers and a washing machine. Benefits
No, we don't have heath care and a retirement package, but we do offer the following to all our employees:
• Housing
We have primitive housing available on-site. We have a limited number of covered platforms on which you can erect a tent. They are situated in the woods, off to the side of the staff pavilion. The staff pavilion is a covered hang-out space with a fire ring. There are shower and bathroom facilities on-site, as well as a washer and dryer that we all share. Housing costs are $2/night or $10/week. We require a $25 clean-up deposit when you move, but you get that back at the end of the season once your platform is completely cleaned. LessΔ • Food
You get a free meal while working (world-famous Smurff-burgers, aka sub sandwiches). They are make-your-own or made to order, depending on your position. There are 3 different kinds of meat, 2 different cheeses, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, and various sauces, chips and cookies for dessert. These are so good at the beginning of the season, and you will be so sick of them by the end of the season! You will, however, find yourself craving them several months after the end of rafting season. LessΔ • Free Trips
There is no charge to go on any of the trips that we offer (except for the chartered dinner cruises), AND you can take 1 person with you, also free of charge. There are certain provisions, such as there must be space available on the trip, and you can′t be working (or scheduled to work!) at the time. This means Saturdays are usually out, since there is rarely room on our trips, and in any case, you will be working. LessΔ • Equipment
Guide equipment available at cost to any employee. This includes PFDs, helmets, paddles, throw bags, and carabiners. These are for your personal use, of course, but if you want to take advantage of this to get a PFD for your spouse, girl/boyfriend, or kid, we probably wouldn′t say anything. Other equipment, such as wet suits or other paddling gear, can be ordered at a (usually) 25% discount off of retail. LessΔ |
